It’s that time of year, and things are getting pretty busy over here at Krista Photography! It’s shaping up to be our busiest season yet, which is awesome! With all of this busyness comes a lot more work on the back end, and I’m realizing that CoCo and I can’t do it alone! So, we’re looking for some more help around here…

What are we looking for?

One or 2 people to work part-time.
Background in photography, graphic design, marketing, administrative assisting, or other applicable skills
Honest, detail-oriented, hard-working, creative, problem-solver who’s eager to learn – preferably someone fun :)
Experience with some combination of Mac computers, Microsoft Office, Quickbooks, Social Media, Lightroom & Photoshop
You’ll need a car to get to my home office in Woburn
Someone who can start the sooner, the better!

Inspire 2012 is almost here!!

Inspire.

It started out as an idea… What if there was a conference that felt more like a community? What if instead of flying around the country to hear people from California talk about running their businesses, we gathered photographers from right here in New England and asked them instead? What if we did it ourselves? These are the questions that Matt & Enna Grazier asked a few of us, as we all looked at them as if they were nuts. Brilliant. But nuts… If it had been my idea, it probably would have stayed an idea, but the Grazier’s are people of action, and thank God for that!

What began as an idea, a question, grew into a real life conference we called Inspire Boston. What was an incredible and inspiring two days in Concord with 100 photographers, grew to something more the next year… Inspire Boston 2011. We added mentoring sessions, shooting workshops, and a vendor lounge and this time 125 people came from all over New England and beyond!

So, here we are, 3 years later, and it’s just 12 days until Inspire 2012 kicks off! This year, we’ve changed the name from Inspire Boston to Inspire Photo Seminars – since it’s really not just about Boston anymore. We’ve moved it to the Sturbridge Host so we could have a bit more space and be a little more centralized for our primarily MA/CT attendees. We’ve got 18 Speaking Sessions, 8 Special Classes (shooting session, portfolio reviews, etc.), a special pre-conference all-day Pictage + ShootQ Bootcamp, an even bigger Vendor Lounge, a mid-conference party with KARAOKE (clearly that was my idea!), one-on-one and roundtable mentoring sessions with the speakers and sponsors, and a killer Wrap-Party at the end! It is going to be a JAM-PACKED couple of days!!!

I’ll be speaking at Inspire this year on Facebook Marketing Strategies. If you follow my blog, you’ve probably liked my Facebook page as well (and if not, what’s stopping you?!). And if you follow both, you’ve probably noticed that I post on Facebook WAY more often than on here. Facebook just makes it so EASY for me! It has dramatically changed and grown my business over the last 3 years. Last year my weddings doubled from the year before, and this year I’m almost entirely booked up for the year already! I give most of that credit to how I share images and communicate via Facebook – but I guess I’ll give a little of the credit to my photographs too, yeah? ;) I’ve been super excited to share my Facebook strategies and theories with the Inspire community, and wouldn’t you know it, Facebook went and changed everything about their business pages three weeks before the conference! So, I’m reworking my talk and trying to learn as much about all the changes as possible, and now I’m even more excited :) I mean, what better time to talk about how to set up and use a Facebook page than right when everything about them has changed and everyone’s wondering what to do?! OK, so I’m excited and also a little overwhelmed, but I do think it’s an exciting time to be sharing about this and I’m hoping that it will be really beneficial to everyone to comes to my talk!

Krista Photography Internships Available!

When I started out in photography almost 10 years ago, my first job was assisting at a big wedding studio in Chicago. I remember the very first task they gave me… shovel the sidewalk :) I started at the very bottom of the food chain. As months went by, I became the studio manager, and then began shooting as an Associate photographer for the company. A few years later, I moved out on my own and started at the bottom again in a new town, with a new studio. I have worked hard over the past 5 years to create a business that I love and that actually supports me. I don’t ever forget those first few months though, and the opportunity I was given to learn from someone successful and to see it all from the inside before I went off on my own.

Over the years, I’ve tried to pay that same opportunity forward. I’ve brought on interns the last few seasons, and it’s been great! I get some much-needed help, and they have hopefully had the chance to learn things they couldn’t have learned in school. This past year, I got a new intern, CoCo, who actually interned at the studio in Chicago just after I moved to Boston, and then moved to Boston herself. She’s so awesome though, that I had to take her on as a paid assistant/photo editor. And man, she’s been SUCH a help to me!!! But here we are, reaching the peak of wedding season (in Boston at least), and we need some more help! So, we’re hoping to find a new intern to add to the team!! Inspire Boston 2011

You may or may not know that for the last 2 years, I’ve been part of a small group of photographers who have planned, organized, and put on a local wedding photography conference called Inspire Boston. The first year was awesome, and this year’s was even better! The whole conference is based around the concept of peer-to-peer mentoring and the idea that as we build relationships with one another and our community grows stronger – we’ll all become better photographers and business owners. It was an intimate conference of just 125 people, and we held it at Concord’s Colonial Inn which gave the whole thing a very cozy and New Englandy vibe. There were a handful of great (mostly local) instructors for presentations, shooting workshops, and mentoring sessions. We also scheduled in tons of free time so that even more learning, inspiration, and encouragement could happen in between the formal class times. And this year we added in Vendor Lounge so that people could connect with some of the industry and the area’s best vendors. All in all, it was pretty fabulous!

Between preparing for my presentation and organizing all the logistics – I didn’t take too many photos for those three days! But here are a few of my favorites from the last day of the conference…

My fabulous assistant, CoCo Boardman shot a few images during & after my presentation with Enna Grazier. Our presentation was on Creating a Sustainable Brand. It went really well, which was exciting, and also a huge relief!

It was especially cool talking with people after the presentation, hearing their feedback – but also watching people talking and brainstorming together. People seemed really inspired to figure out who they really are, and what they want their business to be. Love it!

Later that night we had a Wrap Party at LensProToGo complete with pizza, raffle prizes and a very fun ring light to play with :) I loved this shot CoCo got of me!

And the “Dream Team” who planned & organized the event: CoCo, me, Mark Higgins, Krystal & Paul McNerney, Carla Ten Eyk, Candice Coppola, Diana Chouinard, Matt & Enna Grazier (the masterminds behind the whole thing), and Richard Esposito. What a blessing it’s been to work with these lovely people!!

After the wrap party, came the best part, really – the AFTER PARTY! A bunch of us went back to the Inn for a concert by Jimmy Mazzy & Friends – the most fabulous little old jazz band in the world. Oh, they were soooo fun!!! And they play every Wednesday night at the Colonial Inn, if you ever want to check them out!!

Thanks again to everyone who participated in Inspire Boston 2011!!!! I had a great time, and am already excited for next year! We’ve already begun planning for 2012 so stay tuned for details coming in the next few months!!

Inspire Boston 2011

In November of 2009, my friends Matt & Enna Grazier gathered some friends and asked us to if we’d be interested in helping them put together a conference for local New England photographers. Sounded great to me, and just 3 short months later, Inspire Boston was underway! It was such an awesome time of learning and networking – everyone had a blast. Check out this great video that Richard Esposito put together for it:

In fact, it went so great that we decided to do it all again this year! Fast forward a few months, and here I am today, sitting in the Colonial Inn in Concord, bracing myself for the start of Inspire Boston 2011! This year we’ve made it a little longer, added some more shooting workshops, improved our mentoring sessions, and added a Vendor Lounge. I’m so pumped! Plus, this year I’m actually speaking at the conference…gulp! Enna Grazier and I are speaking on Creating a Sustainable Brand, and I’m both excited and also nervous :) It’s going to be a great couple of days though! Hopefully I’ll be able to share some photos and such later in the week!

Earlier this year, Constant Contact (the company I use to send out newsletters) interviewed me about how I use social media. Apparently, they found my “strategy” really exciting and interesting – which came as quite a surprise to me. I use a hodge podge of social media resources including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, this blog, my website, emails via Constant Contact, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and just about anything I find. I probably use Facebook more than anything else though. I love Facebook – I love being able to connect with old friends, friends who live far away, friends I see all the time, friends I might never hear from again if it weren’t for the site, old clients, new clients, other photographers, my Mom, and all sorts of friends, family & business associates in between. I love that I can know what’s going on in their lives and feel closer to them, like I know them a little better (and vice versa). And I LOVE that I can share photos with my clients, with their friends, with my friends & their friends, and so on. And of course, I love that my friends & their friends can see my work and maybe they’ll think of me when they need a photographer :) I’ve also booked work because people have seen my photos of their friends, or because my friends recommended me to someone b/c of what they’d seen on fb. It’s pretty cool! I mean, it takes some time, but I’d probably be spending that time on fb anyway… at least this way I’ve got work as an excuse ;)

Anyway, Constant Contact recently did a study on small businesses’ use of Facebook and found that most small business owners believe Facebook is even more important than face to face marketing. Well, Reuters found out about the results, and wanted to do an article – so they called to see if I’d mind being interviewed! Naturally, I agreed! I mean, how cool is that?! You want to interview me about why I love Facebook? Um, ok! They even asked me to take a photo of myself at my desk to use with the article, haha! Check it out…

I think the article turned out great! It’s still a little crazy to me, but it’s definitely cool! You can read the full article here :) And of course, you can always find me on Facebook here… ;)

In the last few weeks it’s been very fun and pretty exciting to see a bunch of my weddings featured on some awesome wedding blogs!

Elena & Dan’s wedding was featured on Beantown Bride this week. Beantown Bride is a great new site for local Boston Brides, I’m excited to be a part of it!

If you remember Elizabeth and Ryan’s wedding from early this summer, you’ll know how absolutely gorgeous it was! It was just such a beautiful day and they have been such a wonderful couple to work with! So, I was super excited when the editor of the Boston Weddings magazine called to talk with me about publishing their wedding in the Spring/Summer 2010 edition!! Eeek! Talk about excited!

I didn’t want to mention it until it was official – you know, just in case. But the edition came out not too long ago, so I guess it’s ok to share now!

Eek! I’m so excited for my first publication!! Go out and pick up a copy! Or, go here and read it online :)

Also, I’d like to note that Images #4 & #9 were shot by my 2nd shooter, Mark Higgins, and image #8 was shot by my assistant, Elizabeth Hannah. The photo credit should have read Krista Photography instead of Krista Guenin – every wedding is a TEAM effort!!!

I’m a feedback junky

Well, I’m finally back from a wonderful vacation back home in Indiana! It was a great trip, and hopefully I’ll get around to blogging about it before next year’s trip ;) For now, I’ve got about 100 emails to go through and about 45,000 images to edit. No big deal, should be done by the end of the day… ha! Maybe not.

I just wanted to post and let you all know I’m alive and back to work. And, I just had to share this sweet message I got from Shoshanna‘s mom…

“I’ve been meaning to write for the last week but I knew you were on vacation…I hope it was relaxing and fun. The photos are beautiful! I find myself looking at them every day and I always see something I haven’t noticed before. We are all very happy with them. You really captured the spirit of the day.”

Totally made my day!

Exciting news!

A month or two ago, I applied to the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA). The WPJA is a great organization of photographers, and I’d heard it was incredibly difficult to get in because they’ve got some pretty strict regulations. Even as I looked them over, I was wondering if I really qualified. I mean, as far as photojournalism goes – photoshopping images isn’t really cool – and I do like my Photoshop… So, after a few weeks without hearing back, I assumed that I’d been rejected. But, then a couple of weeks ago I got this in my Inbox…

“It is our pleasure to inform you that after having reviewed your web site and image portfolio, we agree your beautiful work meets the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association membership requirements! We hope you accept this invitation as we look forward to having you as a new member.“

I am SO EXCITED! “The Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association [AG]WPJA is a group of international wedding photojournalists, who capture unscripted wedding moments as they happen, and excel in the art of post-production image processing. The [AG]WPJA is a division within the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA); one which specifically promotes Fine Art Wedding Photojournalism.” That’s exactly how I like to describe my work, and it’s honestly a much better fit for me than the straight-up WPJA. Massachusetts currently has only 12 photographers in the [AG]WPJA, so it’s an incredible honor to be included amongst some of my favorite local photographers (i.e. the Graziers and Anne Ruthmann)!! Pretty cool, huh?!

And to top it off, yesterday I applied for and was accepted as a founding member of Modern Photographers, which is going to be a new site for brides created by the folks behind Trash The Dress and Don’t Box Us In. This is the twitter I got from Mark Eric… “Hey Krista, you’re work is stellar. You would be a welcome member. :) Pre-approved.” YAY!!!!!!!!! Go over there and check it out, I’m listed in the header of the site – along with a few other amazing photographers from around the country!!!

Ok, that’s enough tooting my own horn! It’s just pretty exciting to get some encouragement from your peers!

Off to New York City!

Well, I’m off on another little adventure! Or, a business trip, depending on your perspective :) I’m heading down to New York City tonight for the PDN PhotoPlus Expo for the next few days. I’ll be wandering around a giant trade show, listening to amazing speakers, hanging out with old friends, connecting with new friends, meeting with a potential client, and possibly doing a family portrait session. All this, and then down to Newport, RI for a wedding on Sunday! Shwew! It should be a great trip!

I have a TON of stuff to edit and blog about when I get home. A wedding, a bat-mitzvah, another wedding, another bat-mitzvah, an awesome family portrait session, another wedding, and then some! I won’t able to do much editing while I’m away, but I should be able to respond to emails at least once a day. If you need to get in touch with me, please call! March PUG was awesome!

A couple months ago, I switched my schedule around so I could take part in an awesome photographer’s community here in Boston – the Boston Pictage User’s Group (or PUG). My good friends Matt & Enna Grazier are the local PUG leaders. Since I’m not working for them on a regular basis anymore (aw, sad), I wanted to make sure I still got to hang out with them at least once a month. Plus, I’ve had the chance to meet a whole slew of other great local photographers!

Last month, I got to hang out with Justin & Mary Marantz who were presenting that week. It totally motivated me to win a mentoring session with them through the Thirst Relief auction. Plus, I got to meet my new friend Shyla. Yay! Shyla has become a dear friend in such a short time, and I’m so happy to have her close by :)

This month, the PUG was held at Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts. Matt & Enna secured prizes from all sorts of awesome photographers and vendors, and were raffling them off.

The main speaker of the night was ::e:: – also known as Eric Laurits. Eric is an awesome photographer and quite the artiste. He’s also pretty excited about a system that has revolutionized his workflow – ShootQ. So, he was presenting all about ShootQ and how great it is. I’m not sure it’s the best thing for me, but I’m thinking about it… Anyway, I had front row seats, and this was my view most of the night :)

There were a TON of photographers there that night! I got to meet a bunch of new people, as well as catch up with my friend Robert Mirani. Robert was one of the first photographers I met out here in Boston, and I have had the opportunity to second shoot with him about a dozen times in the 2 last years. He’s an awesome photographer, and an all around great person :)

Great News!!

While I was in Zimbabwe, I got some awesome news! Here’s the story…

Back in September, a fellow wedding photographer, Davina Fear, was offering a scholarship to a new photographer just starting out on their own for $500 towards a seminar or workshop of their choice. As soon as I heard about it, I got excited! First of all, I could use a workshop, and even had one in mind. Second, I could use that $500!! Plus, the scholarship would include 2 mentoring sessions with Davina – and that’s pretty awesome!

I mentioned the scholarship to Matt & Enna Grazier, and they totally encouraged me to apply. In fact, before I’d even begun my application, they each sent recommendations to Davina on my behalf. They were the sweetest, most supportive letters, and I practically started crying when I read them. So, at that point, I had to apply! So, just under the wire I sent in my application, and prayed that God would do whatever He wanted with it…

As it turns out, I WON! Can you believe it?? I’m so excited! I can’t wait to connect with Davina, and I can’t wait to go to the workshop! I decided to attend Liana Lehman’s Photo Business Boot Camp next month here in Boston. I think it’s going to be awesome for me and for my business, and I am so grateful to have this scholarship to help me do it!

Going Solo!

Back in February of 2002, I lost my HR job in Chicago, and I was wondering what to do with my life. Someone asked me one of the most important questions of my life… What would you do if money didn’t matter? For me, the answer was easy – travel and take pictures. So, I decided to find a job in photography and see what would happen. And the rest, as they say, is history…

Flash forward 5 1/2 years. I now live in Boston (well, Woburn actually) and I’m preparing to leave my part-time studio job and take on my own photography business full-time!!!!!!! I can’t believe it! It’s been such a blessing to see how the Lord has provided for me over the years, especially since I moved out here last year.

I still can’t believe how much I’ve learned and grown in 5 years. This, of course, is all thanks to the many amazing photographers who have graciously taught me along the way… Steven E. Gross gave me a chance and the opportunity to learn the hard way – by actually doing it. My 5+ years working with Steven at Real Life Weddings has truly made me the photographer I am today. And the wonderful Matt & Enna Grazier who I’ve worked with for the last year have been such an encouragement and inspiration! Since working with them I can see such a change in myself – my work has improved, my passion has increased, and my confidence is up! Without them, I don’t know if I’d even feel ready for all of this. Every photographer I’ve worked with has taught me something and I’m so thankful to each one – Robert Mirani, Stephen Serio (aka Serpico), Mark Tomaras, Alternate Angles, Tsar Fedorsky, and many more. Thank you for all of your encouragement and help over the years!

I’m so excited for this new chapter in my life and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

It’s all worth it!

Do you ever get so stressed over the mounds of work piling up on your desk? Do you ever feel like you’ll never get it all done? I do, all the time – especially this summer! My photography business is finally taking off here in Boston, and I’ve got lots of work (this is a GOOD thing). Plus, I’m still working part-time for Matt & Enna Grazier – so I’m pretty much up to my eyes in work these days.

With all of that going on, it’s been easy to get frustrated and feel like I’m not making my clients happy. I want to turn things around so much faster than I can right now! But, yesterday was a great day! Not because I got so much done (though I was fairly productive), but because I heard from 2 of my favorite couples!

Maria & Paul’s images were released on Pictage this week, and I got their slideshow finished and up online on Friday. Maria emailed me back with this…

Hi Krista, I have no words to describe how much I love the photos. You captured so many wonderful moments. I can not stop looking at them. Thank you so much for all your beautiful work! It will be so difficult choosing the photos for the book… :)

THEN, I was hanging out with my sister and the kids, and I got a text message from Mark & Courtney who’s wedding album was just completed and delivered this week…

Hey K. Got the wedding book, its frekkin amazing! U’r an artist of note! Tks so much Love M & C

Yay!! That’s what I live to hear! I LOVE being able to take photos that bring people that much joy! What could be better?? I love my job (busy and all :)!

Back in January, my friends Sarah, Tom & Brian hired me to shoot some portraits of them for their parents as a Christmas gift. We had a great time taking pictures around Winchester, and at their home in Woburn. I was really excited with how the photos turned out, and so were they (which is the whole idea, right?)

So, the other night I saw their Mom, Lisa. She’s just as nice as can be! She wanted to thank me for the “beautiful photos” and just went on and on about how much she loves them! She even started crying a little bit when she was talking about her favorites. Now, it’s not my goal in life to make people cry, but seriously – that’s why I do what I do! I LOVE that she connected with the photos. That she could look at these photos and see her children – not just what their faces look like, but who they are and what their relationships are like. THAT is what this is all about! Capturing people – the essence of who they are and how they feel about one another.

I love my job!
