Ashley + Joe — Exchange Conference Center Wedding in Boston

Spring Wedding at the Boston Exchange Conference Center

I’ve gotta be honest with you… I think Joe & Ashley’s wedding was my absolute favorite for 2014!  Maybe it was because they totally trusted me, and gave me the freedom to focus on the moments?  Maybe it was because we had an hour to ride around Boston shooting wherever we wanted with just the two of them?  Maybe it’s because they love black & white photography as much as I do?  Or maybe it’s because they fed me pizza after the ceremony?!  It’s hard to say… but just take a look, and I think you’ll understand!

I started with Ashley & the girls, and my lovely assistant Cristen, over at the Seaport Hotel

Ashley + Joe — Boston Winter Engagement Session

Boston Winter Engagement Session

Joe & Ashley live in Chicago, and LOVE black & white photography… so they were already my favorites before we even met each other!  When we did finally meet, it was for their wintery Boston engagement session – and they totally lived up to my expectations of awesomeness!

We started out with a drink at OAK Long Bar + Kitchen to get warmed up (both literally, and figuratively)…

Then we went for a little walk around Copley Square, in the cold… but they were able to keep each other both warm, and entertained :)

Such a fun engagement session!!  See, we don’t need sunshine and green grass to make some beautiful portraits – even in the cold Boston snow, we can have fun together and get some awesome photos!

Can’t wait to share more from Ashley & Joe’s killer wedding in my next post!  Stay tuned!
(And if you seriously can’t wait, you can head over to their Facebook album and see it all there!)

NOW HIRING: Studio Manager, Photo Editor, Intern

True Confession: I’ve never been a highly self-motivated person.  I’ve always been most successful working in a team environment.  From competing as a Synchronized Swimmer as a kid, and needing those other girls staring me down to get me to jump in the pool.  To working in my first photography job managing a big studio full of people.  To now as I’m building my own little team here at Krista Photography – I need other people around to help me do my best!  I really believe that we can all achieve more if we work together.  My ultimate goal for Krista Photography is that we’d have a group of awesome people working in their strengths and passions to create powerful photographs that capture the truth and beauty of life.
Sounds great, right?!
Well, we just need a couple more people to join our team to get us a little closer to that lofty goal of mine!

Take a look at our latest job openings and help us fill them by applying (see instructions at the bottom), or spreading the word!

IMG_0972
For all of the positions, here are some things you should know…

What are we looking for?

  • People who will fit in well with our little team, our brand, and want to work together to grow and improve Krista Photography
  • Honest, detail-oriented, hard-working, creative, problem-solving go-getters who are eager to learn – and preferably fun :)
  • You’ll need a car to get to my home office in Woburn – and you’ll be a lot happier if it’s not a long commute (trust me ;)
  • People who are not seriously allergic to cats… the cat really does own the place
  • People who can commit to work here until the end of 2015 (or for the next 10 years, either way), and can start asap
  • Someone who’ll enjoy (or at least tolerate cheerfully) the craziness of working for a small business, in a home office… like friends with babies stopping by for visits, a cat stealing your chair EVERY time you get up, me never being ready for work when you get here in the morning, all that good stuff ;)

What will you get in return?

  • Relatively Flexible Hours
  • Fun, relaxed & productive work environment
  • The occasional Studio Starbucks run
  • You’ll probably get to hear me singing to myself a lot, get to pet my cat a lot, and be part of some of ridiculous photos :)
  • You’ll get to be part of a fabulous team, make some new friends, and hopefully have some fun while you’re here!
  • Pay commensurate with experience and final job description (and keep in mind that whole small business thing I was talking about…)

workin

STUDIO MANAGER

What are we looking for?

  • One person to work part-time work – preferably 4-5 mornings/week (possibly an afternoon here & there and/or supplemental work from home)
  • Someone who is smart, well-organized, detail-oriented, hard-working, problem-solving, positive, a task-master, smooth-talker, fire-putter-outer, project manager, who can be the cheerful first point of contact for Krista Photography
  • Experience with some combination of Apple computers, Microsoft Office, Customer Service, and excellent Communication skills
  • Experience with Quickbooks, IT trouble-shooting, ShootQ, Blogstomp, Lightroom, Photoshop &/or InDesign a plus but not necessary

What kinds of things could you be doing?

  • Client Communication – you’d be the main point of contact for most clients and handle all of their questions, as well as sending them updates and information for their shoots
  • Inbox Management – i.e. going through my inbox to weed out what’s personal, spam, stuff you can handle vs. stuff I should handle personally
  • Quickbooks – I would LOVE someone I could train, or who knows QB already, to handle some of the data entry & invoicing in Quickbooks
  • Workflow Management –  keep up with where we are on each job and who’s supposed to be doing what, and keeping us on task
  • Shoot Workflow – uploading images to our proofing site & Facebook, releasing images to clients, prepping discs of images for clients, etc.
  • Digital Asset Management – Help us manage & maintain our extensive back-up system
  • Some or all of the following:  Marketing & Social Media projects, Updating & managing our website, Wedding Album Design, Administrative Tasks, Scheduling Assistants & Second Shooters, Digital Asset Management, IT Troubleshooting, Assisting at weddings, Various projects, Cleaning the office for meetings, etc.

PHOTO EDITOR

What are we looking for?

  • One person to work part-time work – preferably 4 days/week (might be closer to full-time in the fall)
  • Honest, detail-oriented, hard-working, dedicated, creative, problem-solving go-getter who’s eager to learn – preferably someone fun :)
  • Experience with Apple computers, Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Some experience with PhotoMechanic, computer networking, IT trouble-shooting, monitor calibration, SmartAlbums, Blogstomp &/or InDesign a plus but not necessary
  • Someone with an excellent sense of color – can see slight differences between colors, and can learn to adjust color to the way I see it.  Take this test and let me know your score!
  • Someone who knows that the dress is WHITE & GOLD – even if it’s blue & black, because it’s just a terrible photograph ;)
  • Understanding of (or excitement to learn) what makes a great photograph – composition, exposure, focus, emotion, etc.
  • Someone who can come close to replacing the AMAZING & TALENTED CoCo Boardman here in the office!!  Big shoes people! BIG SHOES!! (don’t worry, she’ll train you and share all of her editing secrets with you! – and double don’t worry, she’s still gonna be shooting weddings – she can’t leave us all together!)

What kinds of things could you be doing?

  • Culling – You will have to take the entire selection of 5,000-10,000 images we shoot at a wedding and get that down to less than 1,500 for me to review!  I’m terrible at this, so I need someone who can really see whether an image is in focus, composed well, is meaningful to the greater story, etc and can make decisions quickly and confidently.  Over the course of the year, you will look at THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of weddings, engagements, babies, families, baptisms, international travel images, family vacations, etc… so you’ll need to enjoy that kind of thing ;)
  • Color Correction – You will color correct all shoots in Lightroom, based on my edits of the favorite images.  We aim for our images to look NATURAL, BRIGHT, and have a little POP to them. [see all the posts below this one for more details]
  • Photo Editing – You may edit images in Photoshop for printing – light retouching, precise color correction, sharpening, etc.
  • Album Design – You may end up designing wedding albums for our clients.  We use a combination of Smart Albums (SUPER easy), and InDesign.  You’ll be responsible for creating the design, proofing the design for the clients, making revisions, editing the images for printing, and placing the album orders.

IMG_0639

INTERN

What are we looking for?

  • One person to come in 6-8 hours/week for 3-9 months (depending upon your availability)
  • Student studying photography, graphic-design, or marketing – OR someone out of school who’s just starting out in photography
  • Experience with some combination of Mac computers, Microsoft Office, Social Media, Lightroom, Photoshop & InDesign

What kinds of things will you be learning?

  • Photo Shoot Workflow – prep, shoot, downloading, culling, color-correction, delivery, etc.
  • Data/Image Organization & Management
  • Studio/Office Organization & Management
  • Client Relations
  • Research Projects on new technology, systems, opportunities
  • Social Media Marketing (Blogging, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.)

What will you get in return?

  • Opportunity to learn how a wedding photography business is run from the inside, alongside a seasoned professional, and a great team
  • Additional Mentoring Sessions with Krista, Team Portfolio/Image Reviews, Team outings & events
  • This is unpaid, but lunch will be provided.  We’ll do whatever you need for it to count towards school credit, also.
  • Opportunity to assist at weddings and portrait sessions (PAID)
  • Opportunity to become part of our team for good, with a paid position if there’s a good fit for you as a Studio Manager, Album Designer, Photo Editor, or Associate Photographer
  • Opportunity to showcase & promote some of your personal work on our blog

IMG_0917

If you’re interested in joining in on this craziness, please follow these instructions carefully!  (remember that whole attention-to-detail business?)

  1. Complete this application
  2. Email a RESUME to studio[at]kristaphoto[dot]com

We will get back to EVERYONE who applies… so be patient with us as it might take a week or two –
we do still have to keep up with all of our clients since you’re not here to help us yet!

Seriously, we can’t wait to hear from you!   We can’t wait to meet the new people who we’ll one day wonder how we ever lived without!!

How can YOU help fight Human Trafficking?

Wow!  It’s been a busy couple of weeks since we screened our documentary film, Untouchable: Children of God here in Boston.  The screening was AWESOME – 114 people attended in spite of the freezing cold weather and crazy traffic!  There were tons of great questions after the film, and I wanted to respond to one here publicly.  The big question of the night was – How can we help?!  That really is the whole point of the film – not only to raise general awareness, but to stir people to action!  So, this is the best question ever!!!  I’ve got a bunch of thoughts on how to answer it, and this is my by-no-means-exhaustive list of responses:

IMG_8789

Spread the word about Untouchable!   We need your help to get our film out into your communities!  We’ve got screenings planned all over the country, with more being organized every day.  You can be a HUGE help simply by spreading the word in a few really easy ways.

  • Share your thoughts & passion about the film, with a link to our Website &/or our Screenings Page on Facebook/Twitter/Google+ and every social media site you can imagine!
  • Invite your friends to screenings in their area!  View a complete list of screenings here, and you can see some of the FB events listed here.  Invite your friends through Facebook, email them the links and encourage them to attend, share the screenings in your area on your wall and ask you friends to join you.
  • Reach Out to local community groups and non-profits and encourage them to support, attend, and share about the film.  Groups that might be great to reach out t0 – local Nepali & Indian ex-pat communities and meetups, anti-trafficking organizations, human rights organizations, local churches and religious groups, etc.

Got any more ideas?  Leave a comment below!  Get creative!

Screen Shot 2015-02-20 at 4.01.41 PM

Plan a Screening of the film!   There are some really easy ways for you to plan and host a screening of the film in your own neighborhood.

  • At Home Screening  –  Buy a copy of the DVD at one of our screenings (online options coming soon), or rent the film on Vimeo (available May 1, 2015) – then invite a couple of friends or your small group over to watch the film and talk about it!
  • Community Venue Screening  –  Partner with a local church, non-profit or community organization that has a space & screen large enough to view the film.  Screenings can be set up through Tugg.   The venue/organizer needs to pay in advance for the rights to show it to a group (cost varies by size of the space) – but then they can charge a ticket price if they need to recoup the cost.  Organizers can connect with local anti-trafficking non-profits and even use it as a fundraiser.  There is no threshold for this type of screening – so the screening can proceed no matter how many people attend.
  • Theater Screening  –  Anyone can host a screening in a local theater almost anywhere in the US through our partner,  Tugg Inc.  Any individual, community organization, church, or non-profit can use this option – and Tugg partners with theaters all over the country so it can be done in nearly any US city.  The Organizer/Promoter gets a small percentage of the profits for promoting the film – which is a bit of work.  Theater Screenings can be held on weekdays, and must meet a threshold of tickets sold within a week of the event in order for the screening to proceed.  Non-profits can also use the site to take donations when people buy their tickets, and use it as a fundraiser.  This is a great option for any anti-trafficking group that wants to host a screening to raise awareness about the subject in general, and about their organization too.

With either the Community Venue or Theater Screening options, Code Red Films and Krista Photography with help where we can to promote your screening, and can possibly provide resources like DVDs for sale, and having one of the crew attend for Q&A, depending upon location & scheduling.  With either option we recommend creating a facebook event and inviting everyone you know in the area, posting on facebook often and early, emailing people directly to invite them and encouraging others to do the same.  We’ve also created a Press Kit to help you set it up.

062013_D1163-Edit

GIVE   Giving of your time, talents & resources is always helpful as Code Red and all anti-trafficking efforts rely on the generosity of their supporters.  There are a few ways to get involved with the film, in Nepal & India, and even in your local area…

062013_D1457-Edit

As you can see, there are SO many ways to get involved and make a difference!!  Use your unique talents to make a difference, use your voice and your reach!  If we all work together to fight this great injustice, there’s no reason we can’t succeed!

UNTOUCHABLE: Children of God – Coming to a theater near you!

Untouchable: Children of God

In the brothels of India, young girls perish every day. At least 10,000 girls are trafficked from Nepal to the brothels of India each year. A mere 1% of these sex slaves ever escape or get rescued. UNTOUCHABLE: CHILDREN OF GOD, explores the stories of the people most vulnerable to human trafficking, the “Untouchables” of society, specifically the Badi people of Nepal and the Dalits of India.

062013_D0056-Edit

I am SO excited to announce that the documentary film I’ve been working on over the last 2 years is finally available in theaters!!!!  Code Red Films has partnered with Tugg, Inc. to allow people across America the opportunity to experience this powerful and timely documentary film.  Screenings have already been scheduled in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio and Boston – and more will be planned throughout the year!  Click here to find or even schedule your own screening in a theater near you!

Krista Photography will host the Boston screening on Thursday, February 5th at 7:30pm at Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge.  The theaters require a minimum number of tickets to be sold in advance in order to proceed with the screening, so we need to sell 112 tickets by THIS SUNDAY 1/25.  Please buy your ticket NOW and join us for the Boston Premiere of the film, followed by a brief Q&A!

I will also be attending  screenings in Houston, TX on February 24th, and in Austin, TX on February 25th – so I hope some of our Texas friends can come!

UNTOUCHABLE: Children of God – Documentary Film Premiere

062013_D0238

Those of you who have been following our blog for a while probably know that I’ve been working on a documentary film by Code Red Films called UNTOUCHABLE: Children of God.  The whole process has been incredible – intensely challenging, highly emotional, but so unbelievably wonderful.

062013_D0056-Edit

I’ve met some of the strongest, bravest young women – more resilient than I could have ever imagined.  Their faith in God, and their faith in us has been humbling.  They have shared their stories with us and entrusted us to share them with the world, and that is no small thing.  I have grown to love them so very much and I WISH I could share their photos with you!  For their safety, I’ve opted to keep them offline and you’ll have to view the film to see their beautiful faces.

When can you see the film?  Well!  I’m glad you asked!!  The US premiere is coming up in just a few days!!  UNTOUCHABLE: Children of God will premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:45pm PDT.  I’m excited to go out for the premiere and actually see the latest edit on the BIG SCREEN!  It’s going to be so cool!  Those of you who live in the area – please join us for the premiere!!!  Tickets are on sale now!

For those of you who don’t live in sunny California, don’t worry!  We are working on planning some screening opportunities in major cities across the US for later this year!  I’ll be sure to keep you posted, but you can follow the film on Facebook to get the latest updates.

This film has been such a blessing to me – I can’t wait to share it with all of you!!  See you in Newport Beach next week!!!

Hello hello!!   After such a fun and busy year last year, and with this year looking even better, it seems like it’s time once again to add to our little team!  I need to get a lot of stuff off of my plate so I can focus on shooting, marketing, connecting with human beings face to face instead of being on my computer ALL THE TIME!  And we need to clear some stuff off of CoCo’s plate so she can focus on shooting and photo editing!  So, I think it’s time to hire a Studio Manager!!!

Sometimes we shoot fun pictures of each other :)

What are we looking for?

  • Part-time work – preferably at least 4 mornings/week, possibly an afternoon or two also
  • Someone who will fit in well with our little team, and wants to work together to grow and improve Krista Photography
  • Honest, detail-oriented, hard-working, creative, problem-solving go-getter who’s eager to learn – preferably someone fun :)
  • Experience with some combination of Mac computers, Microsoft Office, Customer Service, excellent Communication skills
  • Quickbooks, IT know-how, Lightroom &/or Photoshop a plus but NOT NECESSARY
  • You’ll need a car to get to my home office in Woburn – and you’ll be a lot happier if it’s not a long commute (trust me ;)
  • Someone who can start the sooner, the better!

Sometimes we have to test the lights for the PhotoBooth…

What kinds of things could you be doing?

  • Client Communication – you’d be the main point of contact for most clients and handle all of their questions, as well as sending them updates and information for their shoots
  • Inbox Management – i.e. going through my inbox to weed out what’s personal, spam, stuff you can handle vs. stuff I should deal with
  • Quickbooks – I would LOVE someone I could train, or who knows QB already, to handle some of the data entry & invoicing in Quickbooks
  • Workflow Management –  keep up with where we are on each job and who’s supposed to be doing what, and keeping us on task
  • Shoot Workflow – uploading images to our proofing site & facebook, releasing images to clients, prepping discs of images for clients, etc.
  • Digital Asset Management – Help us manage & implement amore efficient off-site backup situation.
  • Marketing & Social Media projects
  • Updating & managing our website
  • Wedding Album Design
  • Administrative Tasks
  • Scheduling Assistants & Second Shooters
  • Digital Asset Management
  • IT Troubleshooting
  • Assisting at weddings
  • Various projects
  • Cleaning the office for meetings :)

We work HARD at weddings, but have a lot of fun while we do it!

What will you get in return?

  • Pay commensurate with experience and final job description
  • Relatively Flexible Hours
  • Fun, relaxed & productive work environment
  • You’ll probably get to hear me singing to myself a lot, get to pet my cat a lot, and be part of some of these ridiculous photos :)
  • You’ll get to be part of a fabulous team, make some new friends, and hopefully have some fun while you’re here!
You may have to fight Harriett for your chair, or pet her to shut her up, or get her out of your inbox so you can work... Love for the cat will help you in your job!!

Sometimes we get to go to REALLY fun places, and do really exciting things while we work :)
