Tami & Ryan’s Family Portraits – Chicago, IL

I photographed Tami & Ryan’s wedding back in 2005 when I worked for a studio in Chicago called Real Life Weddings.  Tami actually interned at the studio for a while, and assisted me at a few weddings – and we became friends in the process.  I hadn’t seen her in ages, so I was super excited when she decided to schedule a session for my Portrait Day in Lincoln Park in Chicago this summer!  Almost exactly five years after their wedding, I had the chance to see Tami & Ryan again, to meet Ava & Ryder, and to photograph their adorable family!  I love photographing friends, and I absolutely love getting to work with my brides again – so this was really quite a treat!

It was fun catching up with them as we walked through the Park.  I discovered that Ryan is pastor of a new church in Palatine, IL that was planted through the Acts 29 Network last fall.  It just so happens that my church was also planted last fall through Acts 29!  It was so cool to hear all about their experience and all the great stuff that God’s doing in their community!

I love this family shot!

We even managed to get a few portraits just of the two of them (since you can’t see that she’s still holding the baby ;)!  Ryan assured me that they probably hadn’t had one taken since their wedding, so at least I can say that I’m the one who gets to do it ;)

These two are great parents!  I just love these last couple of shots!

Tami & Ryan – it was SO great to see you!!  And to meet your babies!  They’re so cute, and have such sweet & fun little personalities already.  Thanks for coming into the city for our photo session, and for braving the heat and even exploding diapers!  Hopefully it will be less than 5 years before I see you again :)

Back from Vacation!

Well, I have finally returned from my road trip to the Midwest!  It was a very fun vacation, with a little work thrown in to the mix!  Here’s a quick recap…

Drove with my sister & her 3 kids (ages 3-7) from Boston to Niagara Falls.

Came down with bronchitis.

Visited my old synchronized swimming coach who was coaching at Nationals nearby.  The only other times I’ve been to Niagara Falls is when I’ve been to synchro meets!  (yes, I was a synchronized swimmer & coach for 15 years!)

Visited Niagara Falls and went on the Maid of the Mist for the first time!  Very cool – and very wet!!

Brother-in-law arrived.  Kids excited because “now we’re a family!”

Drove with the whole fam up to Monticello, IN for Guenin Family Vacation 2010!  25 of my favorite Guenins vacationing it up for 3 glorious days :)  Lots of baseball and swimming in the pool, and Euchre, and food, and more boat rides!

Vacation July 2010

Visited a dairy farm.  Almost saw a cow give birth.  scarred for life.

Drove all by my lonesome to Chicago.

Ate at some of my favorite restaurants with some of my favorite girls!

It sure was FUN!  And super exhausting ;)  I would share more photos, but I think my clients need me to get back to work after all this time off!  Back to editing I go…  :)

Portrait Days

To celebrate the launch of my new portraits website, I’m planning to host a few Portrait Days in July.  I’ll be traveling back and forth between Boston and Indianapolis with my family next month, so we’ll have Portrait Days in a number of cities along the way!

Portrait Days will include consecutive mini portrait sessions at a set location on a specified day (see schedule below).  All sessions will be about 45 minutes long and may include any number of people.  Sessions are only $150 (plus tax for MA residents) and will include all images posted online for proofing.  There are a limited number of sessions per day, so please call or email to schedule your session today!  For cities where a location has not yet been determined, the first person to sign up will get to help decide :)

Rhetta, Bill & Hannah – a blast from the past!

When I first moved out to Boston a couple of years ago, I worked for the wonderful and talented Matt & Enna Grazier. I remember clearly my first day, sitting down at the computer and browsing their website. I clicked on Portraits and stumbled across some beautiful photos of a beautiful pregnant women. But, not just any pregnant woman, this was Rhetta! Rhetta was one of my brides back in 2004 when I was an Associate for Real Life Weddings in Chicago. What a small world, huh?!
Two years later, come to find out, Rhetta is pregnant again, and looking to have some more photos taken, by me! I was totally thrilled to see her and Bill again, and to meet their darling daughter Hannah! We met up at the Arnold Arboretum and took a stroll among the changing leaves…

Hannah

What kid doesn’t love this?!

There are those leaves I was talking about…

I just love the look on Hannah’s face! And apparently rubbing her earlobe is Hannah’s thing. I love it when I can catch a kid being completely themselves – doing that thing that makes them, them.

Rhetta & Bill are so cute – just as in love as the last time I saw them!

The happy family :)

A few photos of Rhetta and her belly… Isn’t she gorgeous!

I love this one of Rhetta & Bill because as I was taking their picture Hannah said or did something cute and they both turned to look. I love their smiles as they watch their little girl.

Are you kidding me with that adorable grin?!

Hannah wanted me to smell the pretty flower :)

And Daddy too, of course!

There she goes with that ear again :)

A few fun shots of Hannah and her Dad

And Hannah with her Mom

She really is too cute!

And now, just for fun, a few photos from Bill & Rhetta’s wedding! It’s still one of my favorites from the Real Life Weddings days. And yes, this wedding was shot almost entirely in black & white film!!

Rhetta & Bill, it was SO great to see you again! Hannah is a doll and I can’t wait to meet little Sophie Grace!!

Spread The Love

So, while I was in Chicago, I attended the Spread The Love workshop put on by Justin & Mary Marantz, and Sarah Barlow. It was a great time of meeting new friends, talking through every aspect of our businesses, and of course, shooting some photos!

Our first shoot was an engagement session with the amazing Beth & Nick. They’re getting married in just a matter of days! They were totally great to work with, and it helped that they’re just gorgeous :) It was so fun shooting a couple again (it’s been a long winter!) and I took like a million photos. I edited it down a bit for you though :) Check them out…

It was interesting shooting with 15 other photographers, but Justin & Mary and Sarah did a great job of balancing demonstrating their own techniques and giving each of us an opportunity to take control of the shoot. This was definitely one of the highlights of the workshop! (more to come…)

A trip to Chicago

A couple weeks ago, I got to spend some time in Chicago for a photography workshop. I flew out a couple days early to hang out and visit my old stomping grounds. Ah, to be home again :) It was so great catching up with old friends, walking down familiar streets, eating good pizza, and just waking up each day in the city. I mean, check out the view from my friends’ amazing apartment where I stayed…

at bedtime I could see the moonlight reflecting on the lake…

and when I woke up in the morning, I could see the skyline – both the Hancock & the Sears Tower. Don’t you just love it?!

I knew I missed Chicago, but I didn’t realize how much a part of me the city really is! I thought for a while that it was just Massachusetts that didn’t suit me. But the truth is that it’s SUBURBIA that doesn’t fit! I just don’t think I was made to live in the suburbs (sorry Woburn!). Who knows, maybe I’ll move closer in to Boston one of these days?

It was nice to be home though, and to be with some of my favorite people in the world. I’m thankful that I was able to see so many friends, and that I got a few free days in the city before the workshop began (more on that later…)

Demian, Elizabeth & Esalina

While I was in Chicago a few weeks ago, I was able to spend some time with my friends Elizabeth & Demian, and their adorable little girl, Esalina. Elizabeth was a bride at the studio I used to work for in Chicago, Real Life Weddings, and then she joined us as an employee for about a year. After working with her as a bride and then as a co-worker in the studio, we also worked together on my website. (don’t blame her for the Coming Soon pages though – those are waiting on me to choose my favorites :) Elizabeth is an all-around great person, and her family is just adorable.

Check out these shots from our portrait session last year…

So, anyway, we figured that while I was in town we should get together for photo shoot!

We started the morning at their apartment on the North side of Chicago. I hadn’t seen Esalina in about a year, so we spent a bit of time at the beginning helping her warm up to me. Mom & Dad did a great job keeping her entertained and happy.

After we played at the house, we went for a walk down to the beach. It was a beautiful day at the Lakeshore and Esalina loves the beach!

Lina loves throwing sand into the water!

Despite our best efforts, Lina still fell into the water :) Luckily, Elizabeth was prepared with another cute outfit.

Isn’t she a doll?!

Thanks for a fun shoot you guys! It was great to see you all again – let’s do it again next year!

Bodie & Sara’s Wedding in Chicago

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going out to Chicago to shoot Sara & Bodie’s wedding. It was such a beautiful day! The ceremony was at Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago, and the reception was at the Garfield Park Conservatory. BEAUTIFUL! The whole day was great – thank you guys for having me be a part of it! Here’s some sneak peaks…

Sara getting ready before the ceremony…

Some portraits of the happy couple…

Don’t they look so happy?!!

The U of C campus is so gorgeous!

Ah, the bouquet… It was a bit of an ordeal when the flowers came with purple roses in them, but Sara’s mom made some quick changes and then ended up beautiful!

A sweet moment in the limo

Isn’t the conservatory gorgeous!?!

Thanks again Sara & Bodie – for flying me out to Chicago to be part of your day, for being so understanding about the delay with the pics (with my going to Zimbabwe & all), and also for your generous support of my trip! I’ll be in touch as soon as the rest of the pics are online!!

The joy of business travel…

I LOVE to travel. It’s so amazing to me how we can fly all over the world in a matter of hours. It’s just so cool!

But, sometimes, it’s such a pain! Tonight, I flew from Boston Logan to Chicago O’Hare. First, I can barely get into the airport by myself because I’m carrying so much gear and stuff – 4 bags in all, 2 of them on wheels. Thank God that my brother-in-law, Michael, was able to give me a ride or I’m sure this story would’ve begun with some crazy cab anecdote. Anyway, so I make it into the airport and walk up to the kiosk to check a couple of bags. I checked-in online, thinking I’d save a little time, right? No. I stood at the kiosk for 10 minutes after I’d finished my part, waiting for someone to check my bags. When they finally came to ask if I needed help, it turns out my luggage tags didn’t print. So, they figured that out, and it looks like they’ve got my bags and I’m all set. Great. Security goes off without a hitch (I’ve heard that they’re sending dSLRs through the x-ray separately now, but not at Logan, yet). So, I head directly to the gate they told me to go to. There’s no one there. I think, maybe I’m early? So I sit down, plug in the laptop and surf some blogs. Finally, a lady comes and tells me that my gate has been changed. Ah-ha! I guess that’s what I get for not checking. By the time I get to my gate, they’re starting to board, I get on with no problems. Sleep through the whole flight :) Wake up, land at 5:30pm, struggle to get my wheeling carry-on into a bathroom stall, and out again, and head down to baggage claim. The bag with my clothes comes out right away – excellent! But, I continue to wait for my tripod bag. And, I wait, and I wait. Finally everyone else has left, the conveyor belt has stopped, and my tripod has still not arrived. So, I go to the United desk and ask a friendly customer service rep. He tells me to try the conveyor belt for oddly-shaped luggage. Ok. No luck, it’s not there. So, I go back to the desk. He tells me that I’m not supposed to talk to him, and takes me to a different desk. I fill out the paper work to have my tripod sent to me if it ever shows up (they tell me it’s been scanned coming off the plane in Chicago, so I don’t know if it’s been lost or stolen or what). And I head to the rental car agency. As I walk outside, I see that I just missed the Hertz bus, so I wait for another. In the time it takes Hertz to send another bus, every other company has had 2 – 6 buses pass me by. Deep breath. The Hertz bus finally comes, and gets filled to overflowing on the way to the pick-up. Somehow, I managed to get off the bus ahead of everyone else, and into the queue to get my car, find the car with no problem and head off into some good-ole Chicago traffic. By the time I get to Lincoln Park to my friend’s apartment and find a parking spot, it’s 8:30pm.

That’s a total of 7 1/2 hours door to door for a 2 1/2 hour flight. But, it’s still better than the 15 hours it would have taken to drive – and thanks to Tivo, I was still able to watch the whole premiere of The Office. All in all, that’s not bad :)

Chicago, here I come!

Well, it’s that time of year again – time for me to come back “home” to CHICAGO!! I’m so excited to come home, see friends, eat pizza, and enjoy the city during my favorite time of year!! And of course, shoot another Chicago wedding while I’m in town.

One fun thing is that a church on the South Side of Chicago has contacted me about my photography, and is showing some of my Missions Photography from Mexico and Sri Lanka at their Artists’ Cafe this Friday night. It’s all the way down in Chicago Heights, about an hour South of the city, but I hope some of you out there will be able to come!!

I’m staying with my good best friend, Janell, and we’ll be making the most of my free time over the weekend – eating all of my favorite foods, hitting the lake shore, worshipping at Chicago Tabernacle, and who knows what else. If you can’t make it to the show on Friday, but want to hang out on Friday during the day, or on Sunday afternoon/evening – let me know!!
